Who we are
– a little about us –
A perfect hideaway and home away from home.
Tom Ferreira was a well-known farmer in the Tierpoort area and started developing some of the land he owned on the Tierpoort Dam into a resort. He was an experienced yacht enthusiast with a love for the water. He was the first Free State farmer to take part in the Cape to Rio trip in 1976.
With the development and the construction of the N1 National Road to Cape Town he initiated discussion with the Roads Department for a bridge to be built on the N1, where he would build a filling station. Included in his vision for the future was a resort next to the dam. With this in mind he talked to the Minister of Transport at that time to buy the piece of land along the N1.
Tom’s Place was opened in 1984 with the assistance of Shell South Africa. Tom’s legacy was cemented in place with the naming of the resort. Tom and his family, consisting of him, his with Pauline Ferreira and their 3 children ran the resort, gas station and restaurant, with each having specific tasks that they had fulfil. This resulted in strong family ties and a deep love for the resort and surrounding area.
Tom’s generous personality ensured that Toms place became a popular stopover and overnight place for motorists. Tom’s Place is a landmark when driving from Cape Town to Bloemfontein and lots of families have fond memories of spending idyllic childhood days in on and around the dam.
